Continuity Editing: Match on Action / Eyeline Match / 180° Rule

Match on Action:

Match on action is a very simple but essential technique, where the perspective of the camera changes during a scene and the scene continues to flow.

Here is an example of the term Match on Action being demonstrated.

Eyeline Match:

This employs the audience’s ability to assume things. This series of shots usually shows someone looking at something and then what exactly they are looking at. In this way the audience can see exactly what the character is seeing and what the director wants them to see.

180° Rule:

The 180° rule is a basic guideline in film making that states that two characters (or other elements) in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line
